I thought Act 1 of A Dolls House was well written for a play in the 1800's. Nora is an interesting character. She is not helpless and intelligent as Helmer thinks she is. Helmer treats her like a child in a way. He called her a "feather brain". Helmer makes all the money in the family. He is getting an advancement in his job to a bank manager. So they will have more money. Nora is talking about squandering all of it. Mrs. Linde said " Even at school you were a terrible spend thrift." Helmer thinks woman are only good for house jobs. But when Helmer gets sick, Nora was working. She said "Papa never gave us a penny. It was I who raised the money."
Nora borrowed the money from Krogstad. Which she forged her father's signature. So she was working to pay him back. When Krogstad threatens her if she doesn't convince Helmer to keep his job. He will tell Helmer and everyone else about the forged signature. Nora was hysteric. This was a smart move for Krogstad. But if she does convince Helmer then Mrs.Linde won't have a job. SO Nora has to make a decision.

  2. I agree with you when you said Krogstad's move was smart. That secret of her's will drive her to lengths to keep it away from helmer. And if she doesn't make helmer take it back, she would probably do the worst.

  3. Nora is definitely not helpless. She knows exactly how to play her cards right.
